Second Life Teamwork Assessment Tool
Training simulations are a great way to build teamwork skills and provide team performance assessment. Second Life, the 3D virtual world built and maintained by its members, offers the Teamwork Tester Cube Puzzle. This exercise consists of nine cubes with fragments of six different pictures on the sides. Each subject must solve the puzzle without communicating with other team members. However, during work on the puzzle, steps are logged and evaluated. After the session, the team receives measurable results of the performance as well as metrics for characteristics of individual members such as speed and level of participation in exercise. Exercise evaluations are stored on the web for further review and comparison between teams.
WinJournal Blogging Software
Ever wanted to blog but just haven’t gotten around to starting? Now’s your chance! WinJournal Beta Tester is a new journaling, blogging, and podcasting tool on the market. Though it’s still in its test phase, some of the features offered through WinJournal include being able to publish online blogs that are compatible with LiveJournal, Blogger, Movable Type, WordPress, and Windows Live Space, among others. You can also share audio with listeners who subscribe to your blog via RSS, find Wiki links between your journals and entries, customize your journal with a selection of 35 “skins,” search for any word in any entry or journal, use 2D rendering technology, and password-protect and encrypt any sensitive entries.

Elluminate Live!, a virtual classroom offers a free 2-week trial of the services they offer in the way of distance collaboration and web conferencing. The Elluminate Live! Lite edition provides a shared whiteboard for brainstorming, a remote speaker for connecting participants at the touch of a button, ad hoc session scheduling with remote participants, and also an instant messenger function. Ever wanted or needed a search tool for expert presentations and lectures? Mediasite provides an easy resource to look through over 12,000 presentations, over 250,000 slides, and over 9,000 hours of audio. Presentations are available on topics as far-ranging as commencement speeches to distance learning to quantum theory to Lockheed Martin. In addition to listing Popular Searches, a sidebar also lists Most Viewed Presentations such as "Using Technology to Improve Student Learning." Each search entry pulls up the name of the presentation, the type of presentation (i.e., webinar, webcast, speech, lecture, etc.), a brief summary of its content, as well as the length of the video. Presentation links are viewable, and can also be sent via email. Presentations can also be submitted via form for posting on the site.
Scholar by Blackboard
Scholar by Blackboard is a free service that expands the course materials available to professors and students from across different fields. After setting up a free account, users can do simple or advanced searches by tags, discipline, or institution of the available resources. Users have access to others’ collections and materials, and can also sign up to receive the latest bookmarks using RSS. If a user’s institution has Blackboard Learning System™, a user can set up an account. An account allows for creating one’s own collection, saving and tagging resources, importing resources from one’s browser, and sharing one’s collection with other users. Once an instructor has registered a course with Scholar, students can then contribute to course collections as well.
CourseLab's Free Authoring Tool
CourseLab is a unique free downloadable authoring tool that allows users to set up their own courseware for e-learning. Some of the easy-to-use features of CourseLab include a Power-Point like authoring WYSIWG environment (no HTML or other programming skills required), the ability to integrate pictures in various formats, Java® applets, Adobe® Shockware® applications, and insertion and synchronization of both audio files and video clips. There is a vast array of ready-to-use module templates available, an objective-based scoring system, built-in test creation capability, and publication options for HTML, CD-ROM, and also AICC, SCORM 1.2, or SCORM 2004 for import to any LMS supporting this standard. The site also includes a how-to guide for questions users may have in using different features.
Free iPod Training from Makau
Still fumbling through the features on that new iPod you got over the holidays? If so, check out a free online training session offered by Makau. Hosted by Geoff and Nani, the short video teaches participants iPod basics. The course covers how to install iTunes; transfer music, photos, and video clips; download content; and customize iPod’s settings. But the free course does come with a string attached: Dan Smith, president of Makau, says that the company is offering the course free of charge to introduce people to its upcoming courses that are available for purchase and playback via iPod with video.

The free version offers desktop sharing, white boarding, audio teleconferencing, and public and private chat.

Rustici Software’s SCORM Test Track enables iterative development of SCORM courseware. Trident: Free 31-Day Trial
Trident, developed by Redbird Software, is an integrated development environment (IDE) for creating, testing, and packaging SCORM content. It uses simple wizards and templates, and offers one-click content package preview and manifest validation. After validating files, developers can edit Manifest files, including sequencing and metadata, with simple forms or raw code. Free Simulation Software
Broadcast Express is Forio's free, entry-level web simulation software. A QuickStart Wizard walks you through setting up equations—you can use an existing model or import your own—and making choices about the user interface. You can add pictures or sounds to your simulation if you choose. As users enter their decisions, the application calculates and displays the results. Finally, in Broadcast Express, anyone will be able to run your simulation, but only you can view or edit your models. Models must be fewer than 2,500 equations.

Breeze is a rich web communication system that lets you reach your audience anytime with engaging multimedia content. This trial enables you to host live meetings with up to five people at once, as well as author and deliver recorded presentations with no viewing limits. You can also publish online training courses that can be taken by up to five students simultaneously and evaluate the event management system capabilities.
Free Personal LMS from Nuvvo
Nuvvo is an on-demand e-learning service designed for individual instructors. Nuvvo includes most of the end-user features found in larger LMSs, but specifically lacks the administrative features required for organizing large hierarchies of users, and integration possibilities for connecting with other software systems in an institutions IT ecosystem. Nuvvo was created by Savvica Inc., a Toronto-based software company. The base version costs nothing to use, though it has some ads and gets a percentage if you charge students.
Watson 2.0
Watson 2.0 is a search tool that sits in a sidebar on your desktop. When you work in any one of several programs--currently, it supports Word, Powerpoint, Outlook, Internet Explorer and Firefox on the PC--Watson analyzes the content in your document and automatically conducts a search on the key words it's come up with. Watson returns the results from five domains of content: the web, news, blogs, shopping, and desktop. The free version searches the entire web; the professional (paid) version enables users to eliminate specific sites or specify sites for Watson to search. An enterprise-wide installation can search your organization's intranet.
Swicki
Swicki is new kind of search engine that allows anyone to create deep, focused searches on topics you care about. Unlike other search engines, you and your community have total control over the results and it uses the wisdom of crowds to improve search results. This search engine, or swicki, can be published on your site. Your swicki will present search results that you're interested in, pull in new relevant information as it is indexed, and organize everything in a neat little customizable widget that you can put on your website or blog--complete with its very own buzz cloud that constantly updates to show you any new search terms in your community.
